Quick Tips for Picking Your Wedding Theme
By Sarah Cronin
For some, they have known what their wedding theme is going to be since they were nine years old. For others, they love so many different concepts, that it is hard to pick. Some cringe at the idea of having a theme. Make your day what you want it to be! If you want to turn your venue into a castle, do it. If you just want a simple gathering of friends and family with minimal decor and no color scheme, that will be beautiful too! A theme, however, does not need to be complicated and can help keep everything pulled together from the ceremony to the reception and dance. It can even help you pick a venue if you have several to choose from. When you pick your theme, just be sure that it is something that is uniquely you and reflects your personalities. Seasons don’t have to rule your theme, but should be taken into consideration. A winter wonderland theme, for instance, would be best suited for, well, winter. Some other things to take into consideration involve the comfort of your guests. What will the temperature likely be for your event? If you are having an outdoor wedding in July, for instance, you may not want to ask your guests to wear Darth Vader costumes.
Where to Start
Ask friends and family who know you well, what they see as a theme that best fits you. Take their feedback into consideration. If nine out of ten of them tell you they think classic fits you, this may be helpful to you if you’re on the fence or even looking for a place to start. Another great idea is to compile a vision board. You can utilize Pinterest to manage an online board, or use good old fashioned paper and make a board with bits and pieces of your favorite things. After a while, you will start to see a theme appear!
If you already have your dream venue picked out, perhaps this could serve as a guide. If your venue involves a beach area, this will be a very different feel than if your wedding is going to take place at your grandparent’s ranch. If your aunt has an amazing collection of vintage dishes that she is offering to let you use, maybe the vintage theme is calling you.
If you are still unsure of what your style is, ask yourself some questions:
What does my dream wedding look like?
What impression do I want to leave my guests with?
How do I want to make my guests feel?
What are my favorite colors?
Do I want my day to be remembered as timeless and classic, or something more trendy?
What are some things I have seen online that I like?
What are some things from weddings I have been to that I thought were great?
Taking your budget into consideration is a reality in looking at themes. If it is your dream to have a reception in a castle with a five-tier cake and professional fireworks, and that does not fit into what you can or want to spend, you may have to make some adjustments. A beautiful wedding does not have to break the bank. Even if you have the money to spend, it may not be what all parties involved want to spend. It can be about give and take as well. Flowers are expensive. If you have a huge wall of roses behind the head table in mind, can you scale it back a bit? Or could you perhaps use a different type of flower?
Do not let the word “theme” stress you out too much. You really just need a basic style and feel of your day. Whether it is stately and elegant, laid back and natural, or industrial and fun, you will be fine. You do not have to pick something like a Harry Potter Disney-style event unless that is what suits you. Your day should reflect your personality, but you don’t have to reinvent the wheel here either. Do some online research, look at what others are doing and what is trending and pick what you like. You know what else helps in picking themes, colors and decor?
